A D and an S: fast and steady
One of you wants to decide tonight; the other wants to sleep on it. It's one of the most common pairings, and one of the most complementary, once you stop fighting about speed.
The two of you
D
Dominance
Direct and decisive.
Needs from a partner: the short version, a straight answer, and room to act.
S
Steadiness
Calm and steady.
Needs from a partner: reassurance, time to adjust, and no surprises.
What works
- The D gets things started; the S makes them last.
- The S brings calm to the D's intensity, and the D brings courage to the S's caution.
- Together you can be both bold and loyal.
Where you get stuck: the speed loop
When a decision is on the table, the D speeds up and the S slows down. The faster the D pushes, the more the S pulls back. The more the S pulls back, the harder the D pushes. The S often says yes to end the pressure and means maybe, which the D later reads as a broken promise.

What helps
- Agree on a deadline before you decide, not during.
- The S says when they'll be ready ("Thursday night"), then keeps to it.
- The D gives a heads-up before big changes. For an S, a surprise feels like a push.
Try saying: "Let's decide by Thursday. Is that enough time?"

Questions
Are a D and an S compatible?
Yes, and often very well. The D's drive and the S's steadiness balance each other. The usual snag is speed: one pushes, one pulls back. A deadline agreed ahead of time solves most of it.
What do a D and an S argue about most?
Most often, the speed loop: When a decision is on the table, the D speeds up and the S slows down. The fix is one agreement made ahead of time: agree on a deadline before you decide, not during.
How do we find out our DISC styles?

Is this a substitute for counseling?
No. DISC is a useful lens, not a verdict and not therapy. If your relationship needs more support, a counselor can help. If you're in danger, call 911, the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233), or 988.
